Austra Music Video | Featuring Taylor Ritchie
A few months ago my friend Sylvain approached me to be involved in a music video he would be shooting for the Toronto-based band, Austra. The conversation went something like this:
Sylvain - “Want to skate in a music video? It pays.”
TR - “Yes.”
Recently, Aaron Wheat, Daniel Lefebre and I donned denim vests, strapped on papier-mache goalie masks and decked ourselves out in reflective tape. We were transformed into a gang of futuristic-looking inline skaters who roam the streets with a tiny television set until ultimately meeting with our demise.
It was a cold night and we could barely see out of our masks but we all had a great time. My favorite memory of the shoot was during a location change. Still in costume we piled into Sylvain's car, rolled the windows down and with GZA blasting on the stereo, stared down passers-by.
Austra leader, Katie Stelmanis, talks about the video:
“The main influence was 90′s sci-fi movies like The Ninja Turtles, Super Mario Bros and Garbage Pail Kids, where all the visual effects are done by hand and look really gross. We asked Exploding Motor Car to make the video because they specialize in hand-made effects and puppet-making. ‘Painful Like’ is a song about living life in the sidelines.”
I think they nailed it. - Taylor Ritchie
